"And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it." Matthew 16:18

March of 2020 was a very difficult time most of the world, as we watched COVID-19 transmissions march around from continent to continent. I vividly recall tracking positive cases from Washington State, to California, to Illinois, to New York City, and then straight to Florida. I was on an airplane in February, travelling to New Jersey to celebrate my Godson's sixteenth birthday, wondering how many fellow travelers were "positive."

After my return home, I heard rumors of Broward County shutting down, emergency orders of shelter in place, stay at home, etc. And it hit me like a ton of bricks...our church is not going to be able to meet. What will we do? How long will this last? Will we make it? Like many other humans, fear was the first emotion to hit me.

But God quickly reminded me of Jesus' words when speaking with Peter. Jesus told Peter several things in this sentence, but the ONE that stands out for me are "and on this rock I will build my church." Jesus, acknowledging Peter's Messianic proclamation, told Peter, and the world, that He (Jesus) is the one who builds the church.

Two things happened at our little Jesus' loving church during this time. The first was that several people made large donations just before we closed for in-person worship, and worshipers were faithful tithers, securing our ability to pay rent and salaries. The second thing that has happened, and continues to happen, is that the reach of the church has expanded.

Yes, we have had folks attend in Virginia and Illinois, worshipers who moved from SpiritSong and continue to attend and have stayed with us since they've moved. The reach extends even beyond them.  One such addition to SpiritSong Church is a man who is moving here sometime next year from Connecticut, but wants to worship and fellowship with us now. We just had zoomCoffee this morning (my first ever) and he is attending worship services, Bible studies, and small groups. Another is Chris in Upstate New York, new to our church in the past several months.

Jesus was clear when He said it..."On this rock, I will build my church." He is our general contractor. Let us trust Him for every one of our needs, for He is faithful and will always provide.
